Upon Line Story

As a mom with four young kids, scripture study has been a hit and miss. Sometimes it goes really, really well, other times I’m amazed it even happens. I often felt like I wasn’t doing enough to teach my kids the Gospel and often wondered how well they actually knew the basics of the Gospel.

When Sister Joy Jones gave her talk entitled, “Essential Conversations,” at the April 2021 General Conference, I felt like that was what we needed more in our family, essential conversations. The phrase, “essential conversations,” kept playing over and over in my head.

How do I create more essential conversations?

How can I bring up the Gospel more naturally with my kids?

How can I let my kids know that they can come to me with ANY questions that they had?

In time the idea of Upon Line came to me. Question cards that I could pull out at dinner time or have my kids grab during drives in the car. I began reading through Preach My Gospel and writing down any questions that came to mind, questions that would help my kids to grasp the basics of the Gospel. I knew that if I had these questions were exactly what I needed to help my family develop the habit of speaking about the Gospel and sharing our testimonies more naturally. I then, paired each question with a scripture, deepening the conversation from the question and also keeping the answers focused on the truth the scriptures bring.

No longer feel like you aren’t doing enough to teach your kids about Christ.

Benefits

These cards have been helping my kids to build testimonies of the Gospel line upon line. They are helping them learn the basics in order to build a firmer foundation and from there grasp the things that are more difficult to learn.

What’s more is that the questions can be used over and over, creating a new conversation each time as our kids continue to build their understanding.

The cards have brought us closer together as we’ve had more meaningful conversations around the dinner table. Instead of, “How was your day?” or “What did you do today?” with answers of, “good” or a shrug, the cards bring a greater depth to the answers my kids give. They are thinking about their responses to questions more, understanding better the truths of the Gospel and how they feel about those truths.

And another beautiful thing about these cards is how they have helped me, and my family, to become more comfortable with sharing my testimony of the Gospel. Conversations about the gospel are starting to flow more easily.
